The Music of AlabamaMay 19, 2011
By K. Clark Great compilation of more than 40 Alabama hits. Spans their whole career. Lots of music for a little money. Get it now!
Great, but I'd stick with "Essential"Jul 08, 2010
By John O'Neill While on the face of it this three CD set may seem like a good deal and a comprehensive collection, it only contains 1 more track than the 2-disc Essential (a track-for-track reissue of 1998's For the Record: 41 Number One Hits) and costs twice as much.
There are some differences in the track selection which should be mentioned. "Music of..." is more comprehensive when it comes to Alabama's last years and includes more singles from the mid `90s, namely: "T.L.C. A.S.A.P.", "We Can't Love Like This Anymore", "The Maker Said Take Her", "Dancin' On the Boulevard", "God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You" and "When it All Goes South". "Music of..." also includes the debut single "My Home's in Alabama" which is inexplicably omitted from "Essential". But on the flip side you end up losing six tracks: "Five O'Clock 500" and "Keepin' Up" (both of which were newly recorded at the time "For the Record" was put together), "There's a Fire in the Night", "If I Had You", "Southern Star", and "Here We Are". The last four are, in this fan's opinion, superior to the later hits found here. In either case, both sets are comprehensive in covering Alabama's long career and the 38 tracks covered by both are the career-defining songs which made Alabama one of the greatest country groups in the `80s and first half of the `90s.
So it really becomes a matter of personal taste and budget: again this 45-track "Music of..." set runs around $30.00, while the 2-disc, 44-track, "Essential" is around $16.00. (And if you're willing to go "used" you can pick up the original, out-of-print "For the Record", with its extensive liner notes, for less than $10.00 from an Amazon.com market place seller.)
