DVD-Audio: Good But Could've Been BetterApr 20, 2012
By D.C. Hanoy The 5.1 Surround Mix is recorded at 96 kHz/24-bits. The 2-CH mix is 96/24 as well. Music Videos included are: "B.O.B", "Ms. Jackson", and "So Fresh, So Clean". These are only available in Dolby Digital 2.0, though. I would've preferred them to be in 5.1 Dolby Digital. There is a photo gallery, lyrics, and a short "What is Stankonia?" interview with the band, too.
The DVD-Audio menus are of average overall quality---which means there's room for improvement. The graphics are slightly above average, but the navigation is slightly below average. Basically, direct track access is only available via the on-screen menu (regardless of whether or not you hit "Play" or "Close" when inserting the disc). The "Audio" button does not allow switching between the stereo and surround mixes. Oh, and if you don't hit "Play" you'll have to sit through some annoying Arista records introduction.
Okay, so we get some definitely cool keepers in the videos; but the disc navigation sucks. How does this DVD-Audio handle the important stuff? Well...
The 5.1 Surround Mix is fairly gentle. Vocals are spread across the fronts, but almost never in the surrounds. The hit songs B.O.B., Ms. Jackson, and So Fresh, So Clean appear to have been remixed especially conservatively. It sounds like enhanced stereo. The rest of the disc makes significantly better use of the available extra surround channels. The mix is still tame, but at least I feel like I've gotten most of my money's worth of surround sound excitement. Each of the interludes closes with wonderful vocals in the surrounds -- a definite improvement over stereo. (BTW, Kim & Cookie is my favorite interlude...very funny.) Songs such as Spaghetti Junction, I'll Call Before I Come, We Love Deez Hoez, and Humble Mumble contain solid, sometimes deep, room-shaking bass (that never seems out-of-tune or overdone on my system) and sufficient use of the surrounds. There's nothing too groundbreaking or amazing here, though. I would've enjoyed hearing a more creative surround mix. Still, I'm happy. If I had to choose between owning the DVD-A or the regular CD, I would definitely buy the DVD-Audio version. (C'mon... It has music videos!) It's just that there is room for improvement.

This is a nice debut albumb...i think its debut...any way...its not great...B.O.B is one of a kind... so fresh and so clean is a personal favorite...and of course Mrs Jackson...but it seems that after the our done listening too those songs the albumb dies out... definatly somthing worth looking into if you you can find a good price...
